– Switzerland returns to the UN Human Rights Council
Bern was elected on Wednesday as a member of the intergovernmental body for the period 2025-2027. She is aiming for the rotating presidency next year.

Switzerland will make its return after five years as a member of the Human Rights Council next January and until the end of 2027. The UN General Assembly elected it on Wednesday in New York. Objective now, the presidency in 2025 of the body established in Geneva.
This return was acquired given that it only claimed, with Spain and Iceland, the three seats allocated to its regional group. Switzerland received 175 votes out of 183 voters.
His last mandate among the 47 members of the body ended five years ago. Since then, Bern has been able to participate in the discussions, without however voting on the draft resolutions.
Switzerland had chosen not to seek membership in recent years, so as not to cause confusion with its candidacy for the Security Council in New York. However, her two-year mandate in the most powerful body of the UN system, which she is currently leading for one month, is coming to an end at the end of December. Switzerland also wants to chair the Human Rights Council in 2025.
