MP Hugo Prévost excluded from the LFI group after accusations of “serious acts of a sexual nature”

The parliamentary group of La insoumise in the National Assembly declared this Tuesday, October 8 the exclusion of Hugo Prévost. The 25-year-old MP, who beat Olivier Véran in the last legislative elections, is accused of “serious acts of a sexual nature which may amount to criminal offenses” prior to July 2024.

The La France insoumise group in the National Assembly has one less deputy. Hugo Prévost, elected in the 1st constituency of Isère in July 2024 against Olivier Véran, was excluded from the LFI group this Tuesday, October 8, due to “serious acts of a sexual nature which could be criminal offenses, prior to his election,” we can read in a press release.

The LFI Vigilance Committee against Sexist and Sexual Violence contacted the parliamentary group on September 23, explains this source. A hearing of Hugo Prévost took place at the beginning of October by officials of the parliamentary group.

“It emerged from this hearing, as well as from the elements of the file compiled by the committee in support of several testimonies, that the seriousness of the alleged facts and their systemic nature required the parliamentary group to be contacted so that it could impose a sanction” , writes the parliamentary group.

Sanction decided this Tuesday: an exclusion “in accordance with the principles” of a charter signed by the LFI candidates to “defend feminist values and combat sexist and sexual violence wherever it is found”.

“The decisions of the parliamentary group in matters of sexist and sexual violence are a matter of precaution and the protection of people and are not decisions of justice, which it can never replace”, underlines France insoumise to the Assembly in the press release.

“Justice may be taken if the people concerned decide,” continues the LFI group, which specifies that the party’s Vigilance Committee against Sexist and Sexual Violence is “available” to support victims.

“A desire for sexual and political control of women”

In a press release, the Student Union (a union that Hugo Prévost co-founded before becoming a deputy) reveals that the facts alleged against the Isère deputies “span a period from 2020 to 2024”.

“These cited acts of violence particularly concerned women from successive national teams of our organization, and were used as a tool to establish and assert the domination of a man within the union,” writes the Student Union, which evokes a “climate of terror.”

“The testimonies gathered underline a desire for sexual and political control of women, with actions resembling injunctions on their intimate relationships and their way of behaving, up to, according to the testimonies collected, physical domination through at least two cases of sexual violence”, summarizes the Student Union.

“The Student Union wants justice to be done, and asks Hugo Prévost to resign,” writes the union, “in the name of the necessary exemplarity that we expect from our political representatives, out of respect for the victims, and to prevent that other violence could be committed.
