The Roman proconsul Julius Caesar led a series of military campaigns against several Gallic tribes. Vercingetorix, a young Arverni chief, decides to bring together the tribes to drive out the invader. Despite his efforts, he was ultimately defeated by Caesar at the Battle of Alesia in 52 BCE. This attempt at unification and this famous although little-known character have gone through history experiencing varying fortunes before becoming part of the national novel. The historian and archaeologist Blaise Pichon, specialist in the Romanization and urbanization of Gaul, provides his insight.
