Water resources: here is the state of affairs in Morocco

The Morocco faces significant challenges in managing its water resources. This question remains crucial for the sustainable development of the country and requires reinforced measures. Here is the main data collected by the “Maadialna” platform of the Ministry of Equipment and Water :

  • Rainfall : Around 140 billion cubic meters of precipitation are recorded each year in Morocco. However, much of this water is lost to evaporation.
  • Available water resources : The country has nearly 22 billion cubic meters of water annually, coming from surface and groundwater.
  • Evaporation : Every year, approximately 118 billion cubic meters of water evaporate, significantly reducing the amount of water available for human and agricultural needs.
  • Surface water : They represent approximately 18 billion cubic meters per year and constitute a primary source for supplying cities and agricultural areas. However, they are increasingly threatened by overexploitation and climate change.
  • Groundwater : A strategic resource, groundwater provides approximately 4 billion cubic meters per year, thus meeting water needs in regions where surface resources are insufficient.

Faced with these challenges, the Morocco must strengthen its strategies to limit the waste of waterimprove its management and adopt innovative collection and conservation techniques.
