The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed its support for the in-depth audit of Senegal’s public debt, currently being carried out by the country’s new authorities. This process aims to clarify the financial situation and improve budgetary transparency, a key objective in a context marked by shocking revelations concerning the management of public finances. Julie Kozack, spokesperson for the institution, confirmed this approach during an intervention relayed on her X account on October 4, 2024.

In her statements, Julie Kozack highlighted the importance of this audit, saying: “We welcome the general audit of public finances in Senegal and the government’s commitment to solid governance and budgetary transparency. . The authorities have shared the preliminary results of the audits with our team, who will work closely with them in the coming weeks to assess the macroeconomic impact and define next steps. »

This audit occurs in a context where Abdourahmane Sarr, the new Minister of the Economy, revealed the existence of a hidden debt estimated at 2,000 billion FCFA. This sum, not counted in previous reports, was made public during a recent press conference, causing a real shock among public opinion. Discrepancies in debt management under the previous government point to a more complex financial situation than initially reported.

The discovery of this unaccounted debt highlights the major challenges that Senegal faces in restoring its financial credibility, particularly vis-à-vis international investors.
