In Laval, they create a computer program for 24 hours

The start of the 24 Hours of Code was given on Monday May 6, 2024 at 6 p.m. In Laval (Mayenne), 45 volunteer high school students from Réaumur were busy behind their screens.

Teacher Mathias Hanna proposed this challenge to students from three classes from IT majors. This project, which I have already carried out in a high school in Chemillé-en-Anjou (Maine-et-Loire), makes sense with what we are tackling in class. .

The objective for the students was to build a program based on the video game Minecraft: Construct buildings from blocks, with the eventual creation of a village,” explains Gilles Thenet, teacher at the Laval high school.

The young people, gathered in groups of four to five, did not hesitate: I liked the idea of staying together at school, especially at night,” declares Dylan, 18 years old in final year of high school.

At his side, Enzo had planned everything to hold on: We have something to eat, something to drink… We’re ready! In this group, many were banking on Mathis, 17, very experienced in coding. I already program at home. We are going to be in mutual aid and transmission. It’s very interesting “, indicates the 17-year-old young man.

Two teams tied for first place

Some students being minors, a break between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. allowed everyone to rest a little. After breakfast, they go back to their work recalls Gilles Thenet, accompanied by his colleague Jean-Rodolphe Letertre, 3e teacher who supervises the adventure.

After 24 hours of hard work, the teams presented their algorithm in operation on Tuesday. However, the jury was unable to decide between two teams which therefore finished in first place.

“We had some great projects,” underlines Mathias Hanna. This challenge turned out to be “a great adventure”. The operation will be repeated next year.
