SENEGAL-ENVIRONNEMENT-EDUCATION / Back to school: nearly 800 schools sanitized in Dakar and the regions – Senegalese press agency

Dakar, Oct 4 (APS) – A total of 798 schools in Dakar and other regions were sanitized a few days before the start of the school year by the Ministry of Urban Planning, Territorial Communities and Territorial Planning, and the of National Education, we learned on Friday from an official source.

These operations were organized in collaboration with the National Integrated Waste Management Company (SONAGED) as part of the 2024-2025 School Upgrading Program.

”To date, in Dakar, out of a total of 405 scheduled schools, 214 have already been cleaned, representing an achievement rate of 53%, and 191 schools to be taken care of. For the regions, out of 962 schools planned, 584 have been sanitized, with an achievement rate of 61%, while 378 schools remain to be cleaned,” we read in a press release sent to the APS.

”This vast campaign to clean schools in Senegal aims to prepare schools for the start of the school year through sanitation operations,” indicates the same source.

She specifies that ”cleaning operations include cleaning schools and their surroundings, weeding, waste disposal, installation of garbage bins and selective sorting points and the establishment of SONAGED in each school to monitor operations and raise awareness among students and teachers.

The start of the school year for students is scheduled for Monday throughout the country.
