Ottawa, Ontario, October 1, 2024 — The Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, the Honorable Gary Anandasangaree, issued the following statement today:

“Today we observe Mi’kmaq Treaty Day, recognizing and celebrating historic treaties of peace and friendship. These treaties are solemn Nation-to-Nation agreements intended to establish peaceful and meaningful relations between the Mi’kmaq and the Crown. As we continue to strengthen and rebuild our relationships based on mutual respect and cooperation, the spirit of the Peace and Friendship Treaties serves as a guide for establishing partnerships between the Government of Canada and these Nations.

October 1 also marks the start of Mi’kmaq History Month, which aims to raise awareness of Mi’kmaq culture and heritage. We encourage all residents of Canada to take the time today to recognize that we are all treaty people. When we recognize our connections to the treaties, we move forward together on the path to reconciliation. »
