Maxi-solar power plants, “Médor” in the office and the green transformation of a district of Nyon – rts.ch

A calculator to compare future health insurance premiums, a couple of Russian opponents guided by hope, the gigantism of certain power plants, dogs increasingly better tolerated at work and a residential neighborhood converted to all- renewable: these are the choices of the week from RTSinfo.

COMPARISON – Calculate your health premiums after the announcement of the increase

The increases in health premiums are now known, of 6% on average at the national level. Policyholders have until the end of November to change funds and limit damage. Be careful, however: some offers come with restrictions of which it is better to be aware, such as no longer being able to choose the treating doctor or paying for your medicines in a pharmacy before reimbursement.

These conditions are often the counterpart to obtaining lower premiums. In collaboration with the French-speaking Consumer Federation (FRC), the RTSinfo Data unit and the program On en parole offer you a calculator which allows you to compare not only the prices, but also the conditions of compulsory health insurance.

INTERVIEW – The hope of democracy among the Kara-Murza opposition couple

Released this summer as part of a vast prisoner exchange, Russian opponent Vladimir Kara-Murza was invited to the 7:30 p.m. show with his activist wife Evgenia. Both shared their hopes for a democratic state in Russia in the near future.

Vladimir Kara-Murza was serving a 25-year prison sentence in a Siberian penal colony for “treason” after condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine. His wife Evgenia, a translator and human rights activist, took over during this time to mobilize public opinion and hold President Vladimir Putin’s regime to account.

Now exiled, the former prisoner assures that he will return to his country in the near future. “A day will come when Russia will be a democratic, European and free country. And that day will come much faster than people believe,” he said. For Vladimir Kara-Murza, Vladimir Putin’s regime must now “absolutely lose” the war in Ukraine. “After that, it will be necessary to reintegrate a changed, new and democratic Russia into Europe and the international community”, a sine qua non condition, according to the opponent, for having peace in Europe.

CONSUMPTION – Ever more numerous, ever larger solar power plant projects

Solar power is establishing itself as the essential player in the energy transition. South Africa, Egypt and Chile have focused on solar power plants, and even the United Arab Emirates have gotten involved.

Solar installations often under the banner of superlatives: Australia announced last month that it wanted to build the largest solar power plant in the world, which will power the equivalent of three million homes. Other gigantic projects have started elsewhere on the planet, in India in particular, but also in China.

In ten years, solar energy production capacities around the world have increased eightfold. While solar power did not even represent 20% of all new energy sources built on the planet in 2021, it will, thanks to China in particular, be nearly 40% in 2024. According to projections, solar power should represent more of 50% of all new energy sources built in 2028.

REPORT – When “Médor”, “Ulysse” and “Nala” become your work colleagues

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of dogs in Switzerland has exploded – more than 50,000 in four years, for a current total of 550,000 – and shelters are struggling to manage abandonments linked to the return to face-to-face work. For their part, companies are wondering whether they should accept the presence of dogs in the workplace.

According to a survey carried out by the iVox institute last spring, 35% of Swiss companies have implemented specific regulations on the presence of dogs. In addition to preventing abandonment, the positive effects noted of the presence of a dog at work are the reduction in general stress levels and a positive influence on the atmosphere in the office.

However, despite this positive wave, not all companies are yet ready to take the plunge, according to the hundred of them surveyed by the RTS. Traditional banks, insurance companies and administrations remain reluctant, citing allergies, fears or even cleaning problems. But the more companies seek to display a modern and social image, the more favorable they appear.

REPORT – A district of Nyon succeeds in the challenge of total energy transition

The eleven buildings in the La Paix district in Nyon, in the canton of Vaud, have been completely renovated in terms of energy. Succeeding in transitions of this magnitude is a significant challenge.

To initiate a change on the scale of an entire neighborhood, you must obtain the green light from each of the owners. They must agree on the work to be carried out as a priority, with often heated debates. It was simpler in Nyon, because the buildings all belong to the Coopérative d’habitation de la Paix.

Renovating real estate from top to bottom, however, has its price: 5.3 million francs in the case of the Nyon neighborhood. Although municipal, cantonal and federal subsidies may be involved – 13% of the total cost in this case – they are, however, rarely decisive for owners when deciding to begin this type of project.
