It came down to a few votes. On Wednesday in New York, the UN General Assembly adopted a non-binding resolution “demanding” that Israel “end without delay its unlawful presence” in the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem. The text, which refers to an advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued last July, was supported by 124 countries against 14 and 43 abstentions, including Switzerland. It needed 121 votes to obtain a two-thirds majority.

Bern’s support for the ICJ is “unwavering,” began by recalling the Swiss ambassador to the UN in New York, Pascale Baeriswyl. The illegality of the occupation of the Palestinian territories by Israel since 1967, as mentioned by this same court of justice, “is beyond doubt,” she continued. Two elements of the resolution, however, led Switzerland to abstain: the demand for an Israeli withdrawal within twelve months without security guarantees and the obligation to apply sanctions on goods from these occupied territories, a boycott that Bern does not follow.
