Coca-Cola recall: Canned drinks flagged for coating containing bisphenol A

On September 24, 2024, the Rappel conso website reported several references of drinks sold in cans. And in particular, Coca-Cola, original flavor. The reason? The presence of bisphenol A in the coating.

Check your cans. Consumer reminder publishes a series of reports for cans sold in Mayotte. The coating of their packaging was apparently made from bisphenol A, a chemical substance banned in food.

Several cans affected

Several cans are affected by the “presence of an interior coating of epoxy resin produced from bisphenol A”, notes the government website.

These are Coca Cola Original Taste (Lot P14JUN24MT3 – 12: 55BB14JUN2 (), Star Cola (Lot P05042024), Cheers flavor (Lot EX: 18-11-24 < 14:48 >), Rita Guyava (Lot MFD : 05/15/2023-EX: 05/152025) and Ice Coffe Cappuccino (GTIN 4711476616447 Lot P: 04/11/2023 1:01 p.m./
E: 11.04.2025 L-1104C).

Consumers are urged to bring back these cans and especially not to drink them. They will be refunded.

Reprotoxic

The cans were recalled because they “exceed the safety threshold” in terms of bisphenol A, or BPA. According to Ansesit is a substance identified as reprotoxic – which can induce reproductive disorders. It could also be a endocrine disruptor.

The agency had “confirmed the health effects highlighted in 2011, in particular for pregnant women with regard to the potential risks for the unborn child.”

“Since January 1, 2015, it has been banned in baby bottles and other food containers. This legislation should lead to a very significant reduction in the level of exposure to bisphenol A through food,” explains the Food Safety Agency.
