Producer and musician Roli Mosimann died on Sunday, Young Gods said in a statement on Wednesday. Winner of the 2021 Swiss Music Prize, the German-speaking musician had produced or remixed the Fribourg group, as well as many major rock groups such as Faith No More and New Order.

“Roli Mosimann was very close to the band. He produced our first five albums,” Young Gods wrote in a statement Wednesday. “He was like our fourth member, the man behind the console: mixing, producing and arranging.”

Originally from Thurgau, the Alemannic had collaborated on the first album of the Young Gods in 1987 and on four others in the 1990s. It is to him, in part, that we owe the cold and scathing industrial sound, the trademark of the group.

Swans drummer

In the 1980s, Roli Mosimann moved to New York and joined the Swans, one of the major bands of the American noise and post-punk scene, as a drummer. Mosimann contributed greatly to the radical sound of the New York group with his powerful and haunting drumming.

Over the course of the albums, the Swiss became increasingly familiar with the studio tool and participated in the development of the Swans’ sound universe, which is at once heavy, brutal and hypnotic.

Producer of many rock groups

At the same time, he began to be in demand by groups and artists who were attracted by his mastery of electronic studio technique. In addition to the Young Gods, he would feature Faith No More, Marilyn Manson, The The, New Order and the Smashing Pumpkins.
