Collateral effect of the closure of the Léonard intersection: the municipalities south of Brussels expect an increase in traffic. This is the case in Auderghem, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Watermael-Boitsfort, but also Uccle, which fears an increase in congestion along the Chaussée de Waterloo.
”It’s going to be a big mess”, fears Boris Dilliès (MR). Assuring that he wants to minimize the impacts in his commune, the mayor is reopening a sensitive issue: the Bois de la Cambre.
A letter has just been sent to Minister Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) and Brussels Mayor Philippe Close (PS): “subject to ongoing discussions and procedures, I officially ask you to reopen the Bois de la Cambre to automobile traffic to protect our residents and our traders, whether they are from Uccle, Brussels or Ixelles.”
Waterloo landlocked, Flanders locks access to the E411: from June, the entrance to Herrmann-Debroux from the Ring will also be closed
Contacted, the liberal representative indicates that this request linked to “a case of force majeure” is independent of current procedures and Uccle’s dispute with the City. It is requested to reopen Avenue de Diane (lake side) which would allow commuters wanting to leave Brussels to reach, via Avenue de Groenendael, Drève de Lorraine or Chaussée de la Hulpe.
According to Boris Dilliès, this one-off and partial opening can take several forms: opening only during the week, or even only during peak hours. “Everything can be examined.”
Chantier Léonard: Brussels Open-VLD defends Lydia Peeters, “if we do nothing, it will be even worse”
We know the differences of opinion within the majority in Uccle on the question between MR and Ecolo. The Greens were, the mayor tells us, “informed” of the letter although they did not associate themselves with the Liberals’ approach.
More buses, free SNCB parking, carpooling lane…: this is what Auderghem is asking to minimize road chaos at the Léonard crossroads
Contacted, the office of Philippe Close (PS) did not comment on this request. For the team of Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) on the other hand, the reopening of the wood “is not really a solution” because it does not offer “new alternative”. “The capacities of Roosevelt Avenue are currently sufficient for the postponement.” The firm adds: “Spring has arrived, the woods will attract a lot of people. Opening it to cars will not solve congestion and will also create road insecurity.”
