The State of Friborg is launching its new service this week which allows young people aged 18 to subscribe free of charge for one year to a Friborg regional newspaper. For 2024, all young people born in 2006 and domiciled in the canton can take advantage of the offer.
Young people from Friborg who are celebrating their 18th birthday will therefore be able to benefit from an original birthday gift, the Department of the Economy (DEEF) announced on Wednesday. Subscription orders for a media outlet of their choice can be submitted with immediate effect via an ad hoc online form.
Young people will be able to choose their subscription from the titles of the regional and local Friborg press which appear at least once a week. In accordance with the media habits of young audiences, priority is given to digital subscriptions.
Awareness action
A subscription to the print newspaper is only granted if a digital option is not available, the release said. Young people who reach the age of majority in 2024 have the opportunity to subscribe to the subscription, regardless of the day of their birthday.
Concretely, a person who celebrated their 18th birthday in January can now subscribe to the subscription, just like someone who was born in August, for example. Subscriptions are also digital for titles like La Liberté, La Gruyère or Freiburger Nachrichten.
Three titles, however, do not offer a digital offer: Le Républicain (Estavayer-le-Lac), le Murtenbieter (Morat) and l’Anzeiger von Kerzers (Kiètres). The service follows the adoption in March by the Grand Council of the law on young people’s access to the media.
The intention of the measure is to raise awareness among young people of regional and cantonal issues, and to indirectly support the titles of the regional press. The law was accepted by 79 votes to 13 with 1 abstention, not without criticism.
