As part of the 9th edition of Reading Nights organized by the National Book Center, whose objective is to promote reading among all audiences, the establishment Our Lady of Compassion organize a special event open to all and free on Saturday January 25 in the heart of the high school chapel. This little-known heritage treasure recognized for its exceptional stained glass windows will open its doors from Avenue du Maréchal Joffre from 3 p.m. and will be accessible to all audiences.

Discovery of hidden heritage

A chapel dating from 1874 at the time of the founding of a convent and a boarding school for young girls by Mother Guibret from the congregation of the sisters of Notre-Dame de la Compassion in and which is part of the heritage of Marmande.

Often unknown because closed to the public the majority of the time, this religious building located in the center of the private high school has exceptional stained glass windows made by the glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant which gave this place a unique character.

“This event will be an opportunity to open this place to the public” explains the designer and illustrator Marmandaise Mlle Zélia who initiated the event and who serves as a documentalist within the high school.

A special evening for Reading Nights

” There will be a series of readings aloud within the chapel on the theme of heritage”. For example, there will be extracts from the novel The Dresser with the Colored Drawer by Olivia Ruiz which refers to Spanish heritage. “All the readers volunteered and chose what they were going to read. Volunteer students will participate in this exercise which is not easy. » There will also be a music reading of a text in sign language provided by Héloïse who runs a workshop at the high school.

Prior to this time dedicated to reading which will take place from 6 p.m., the chapel will be accessible from 3 p.m. with the possibility of enjoying an exhibition “Images from the Louvre” where reproductions of paintings from the famous museum will be displayed. A Libellule bookstore stand will complete the exhibition and a signing session with historian Benoît Boucard and Miss Zélia will also be on the program from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
