The miniature donkey who lived in Bol Park in Palo Alto inspired one of the animators Shrek the character dubbed in the original version by Eddie Murphy.

His name was Perry and he was a minor local celebrity. This 30-year-old miniature donkey had indeed inspired the character of the Donkey in Shrek. Suffering from hoof disease, he was euthanized at the age of 30.

“We are heartbroken to learn that our beloved Barron Park donkey, Perry, passed away yesterday at the age of 30. He was a valued member of our community and we know many people will be touched by his death”, indicates on Instagram the official account of Park Darron for donkeys.

A few hours with Perry

The animal lived in Bol Park, Palo Alto, California, as did one of the animators who worked on the animated film Shrek for Dreamworks Studios. Directed by his wife towards the Perry pasture, he took it as a model. Then he brings a team of entertainers to Bol Park to spend a few hours with Perry. The donkey had posed for photos and sketches, which helped model the character of the Donkey.

The talkative and funny character of the donkey in the animated saga is dubbed in the original version by actor Eddie Murphy. In French, it is the actor Med Hondo, French voice of Eddie Murphy, who died in 2019, who voices the Donkey.

The first film in the Shrek saga was released in 2001. Three sequels followed: Shrek 2in 2004, Shrek the third in 2007 and Shrek 4: Once Upon an Endin 2011.
