“This film is like an old-fashioned tragedy”

Russian actress and star Chulpan Khamatova, who notably played in Good Bye Lenin ! (2003), by Wolfgang Becker, was at the peak of her career when she decided to leave Russia, the day after the invasion of Ukraine, on February 24, 2022. She had just signed a petition against the war. The forty-year-old settled with her daughters in Riga, Latvia, a country of 2 million inhabitants where she works with new directors and filmmakers.

Into the dystopia Quiet Lifeby Greek director Alexandros Avranas, Khamatova plays a Russian migrant, a teacher, arriving in Sweden in 2018 with her activist husband and children. While the family’s request for asylum was refused, the two girls fell into a comatose state one after the other. This film with fantastical overtones is inspired by resignation syndrome, a real pathology which affects certain children of refugees faced with a situation of insecurity. The actress with short hair recounts a grueling shoot which, while making her relive painful choices, had the effect of a “therapy”.
