A cultural bridge between Vietnam and France

The Courier of Vietnam today gives the floor to François Bibonne, Franco-Vietnamese director, passionate about his origins. Four years ago, he set out to capture the essence of Vietnamese classical music in a documentary titled Once Upon a Bridge in Vietnam (He was a bridge in Vietnam).

Since December 17, this work has been broadcast on FPT Play for a period of two years. Through this cinematographic adventure, François Bibonne carries a message of hope and encouragement to young directors, whether in Vietnam or abroad.

François Bibonne:

I am very moved to see my film Once Upon a Bridge in Vietnam on the first streaming platform in Vietnam, FPT Play.

For two years, 100 million Vietnamese will be able to discover this quest for Vietnamese origins through classical music… and meet these endearing characters who welcomed me so tenderly. This bodes well for young independent directors: starting from nothing, it is possible to do everything.

The biggest obstacle is the temptation to give up, to think that loneliness is a sign of failure, to believe those who tell us that we are stubborn and that we must move on to something else. A score can be read endlessly, it always finds a better interpretation. The pianist must “rest” his playing, simmer his memory, to then better attack a difficult piece. It could take months, years. This long-term approach is the same for the visual artist: how many versions before reaching the one that will be broadcast?

And there is teamwork. I can’t thank everyone who helped me enough. Every time I watch this film, I feel like I belong to this little family who taught me how to become a director, and I remember all those audiences who had the patience to advise me during the first screenings .

Good news is always the start of a new adventure, like one ring leading to another. This film deserves a more international broadcast, with the participation of TV5 Monde, Canal +, Netflix.
