Our opinion on Indiana Jones and the Clock of Destiny :
The great return of the greatest archaeologist in the history of cinema was highly anticipated ! His last adventure dates from 2008, and the idea of a fifth part has been in the pipeline for many years. This time, Steven Spielberg leaves his place to James Mangold behind the camera, and as if to show that he deserves this very honorary place, the filmmaker behind Logan et Le Mans 66 goes all out from the introduction! During a sequence of almost 25 minutes, the director gives us a real lesson in directing, and a real technical demo aesthetic slap.
Rhythm is the key word of this fifth opus. Whether in the direction, or in the writing, we feel that Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) left his mark on the screenplay, in addition to playing the very beautiful role of Indiana Jones’ goddaughter. The latter is now an old man, on the verge of retirement, when this young woman comes to pick him up for one last adventure, in search of Dial of Destinya mysterious artifact fashioned by Archimedes 2,300 years earlier.
It is amusing to see that for the first time, the archaeologist (who has lost none of his splendor and panache) is not the driving force behind the action. He gets recruited despite himself and a little by chance by Helenathis intrepid young woman who recalls the Indy of her younger years. She embodies the next generation, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge impresses in such a physical role. We’ve never seen her like this, but the action suits him perfectly.
There are lots of things to say about this new part, which respects the specifications without giving the impression of déjà vu. James Mangold brings enough new blood to give the impression of a real renewal and that feels good! The film has its share of good surprises, and even if it is a little too long, we do not shy away from our pleasure. Especially when Mads Mikkelsen is there, for such a tasty villain role. As usual, the Dane is a monster of charisma, even though he plays the role of a Nazi mad scientist.
