Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev, who maintains good relations with Vladimir Putin, deplores Russia's attitude which only evokes “a tragic incident”.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev accused Russia Sunday to be responsible for airliner crash in Kazakhstan which left 38 dead and for wanting to conceal the causes of the accident. The Russian President Vladimir Poutine presented his excuses Saturday in Ilham Aliev for “the tragic accident” occurred Wednesday in Russian airspace when air defenses were activated, without formally recognizing Moscow's responsibility.

“Our plane was shot down by accident”Ilham Aliev said on state television on Sunday. The head of state wants Russia to recognize its guilt in the accident and to punish those responsible. Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev spoke by telephone again on Sunday, the Kremlin said. Flight J2-8243Azerbaijan Airlines which provided the link between the Azerbaijani capital Baku and Grozny, in Chechnya, crashed near the town of Aktau, in Kazakhstan. The accident caused at least 38 deaths among 62 passengers and five crew members who were on board. Four sources familiar with the preliminary results of Azerbaijan's investigation told Reuters on Thursday that Russian air defenses had shot down the plane by mistake.
