Like a long film in one-hour segments, which you can devour in a weekend or a few days.
To include in your calendar for next month: Crowsnew miniseries from the director of Miscellaneous facts et Before the crashStéphane Lapointe, which is so gripping that you will have a hard time not continuing with the next episode.
And we won’t make you wait since all six episodes will be available Thursday on illico+.
The Videotron platform, which delighted its subscribers with Black Lake et Separate company in recent years, comes with another series that mixes detective and supernatural intrigue.
A race against time, punctuated by strange events, where a serial murderer keeps a duo of investigators on adrenaline.
Even though we filmed mainly in the Montreal region, the story of Crows is camped in Quebec. Investigating sergeant Gabrielle Blanchette (Mylène Mackay) arrives from Baie-Comeau to join the Major Crimes Bureau, where she teams up with Clémence Bernier (Pascale Bussières), at the end of her career but determined to postpone her retirement as long as possible .
Official trailer for “Raven” (illico+)
The two women do not like each other from the start – tension quickly builds between them – but each has their strengths. Although Gabrielle is imposed on her against her will, Clémence sees in her new colleague an investigator who has instinct.
The duo must first investigate the murder disguised as suicide of a teenager from Lévis. By asking questions, they discover that Jules Latraverse had committed serious acts before being found dead.
Gabrielle and Clémence do not even have time to shed light on this homicide before a second murder occurs, followed by another, all signed by its author. A very strange detail connects the victims: they are all found with a raven bone stuck in their throats.
This is where the famous black birds come in; could the crows have committed the murders themselves? Unless the killer uses them to commit his crimes? It’s up to you to find out.
To get the full experience, I suggest you watch the series with the lights off or in the dark, just to be as scared as possible.
“For those who want goosebumps before the Christmas turkey,” director Stéphane Lapointe wishes us, once again very effective and who visibly takes pleasure in giving us the scares.
Even though Lapointe is a fan of Hitchcock, Crows is not a new incarnation of the film The birds from the master of suspense. Though.
“Stéphane works on tension in a bit of the same way. He puts things in the viewer’s head and sows fear like Hitchcock, instead of being frontal or going into the gore», explains Pierre-Louis Sanschagrin, who was the main author of Counter offerin addition to collaborating on the new TVA comedy, Come to the living roomwhich we will see in January.
To create his story, on which the author Marie-Ève Bourassa collaborated, Pierre-Louis Sanschagrin claims to have been inspired by an event “which marked Quebecers”, without being able to say which one it is, for fear of say too much about the plot.
Stéphane Lapointe was filming for the fourth time with Mylène Mackay, who became his muse, but it was a first with Pascale Bussières, who we happily find in a leading role.
The two women also make a powerful duo on screen, supported by their boss Karim Benali (Mani Soleymanlou) and their colleague Mike Toussain (Iannicko N’Doua).
We also understand that Gabrielle suffers from fragility and injuries whose seriousness we will undoubtedly end up knowing.
Other great reunions with Marie Tifo, in the role of Gabrielle’s mother, suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and witness to horrifying apparitions.
“Chantal has returned,” Murielle repeats, without us yet knowing who it is.
To show us these crows on screen, the production at Encore could have called on a Toronto firm specializing in this species of birds, but would undoubtedly have blown its budget. We instead resorted to visual effects which do the job very well.
When we see real birds on screen, they tend to be crows, which ornithology enthusiasts will no doubt be able to distinguish. A bit like the tarantula STAT which was not a real spider from Sydney, but Emile the tarantula… from Saint-Calixte.
Speaking of short series, if you loved it like me Surprising Detectiveknow that a season two is in development: three texts out of six have already been written. Same thing for Separate companyanother excellent series about to return for a second season.
By the way, Hot Ones QuébecMarc-André Grondin’s spicy interview series, is the biggest unscripted success since the creation of Vrai, a platform recently merged with Club illico.
As for Crowseven if the story is completed after six episodes, it is not impossible that we see the investigators again in a new investigation.
With The collectionrecently released on illico+, and Crowsonline on Thursday, you will have plenty to keep you busy during the holiday break.
