The organizers admitted before the start of the Marmande festival that reservations were more timid than last year. While it is still too early to assess the loss of attendance at this 28th edition, the decline in festival-goers’ purchasing power is not unrelated to this phenomenon. Those who have found the means to come, on the other hand, are trying to limit their costs. Like Léa and Romane, who are chatting next to their tent. Coming from Bordeaux, the two students are on a work-study program: they each set aside 450 euros of their budget over four days, to see the rapper PLK or the DJ Kungs.

“For the tickets, we plan ahead, we booked at Christmas and paid in three instalments,” explains Romane. “That left me broke for three months,” admits Léa, 20, who admits that this gap is only once a year. “It’s the only festival we travel to, so we treat ourselves. Afterwards, we don’t usually eat much and we went to Spain before coming for the tobacco and alcohol,” explains the duo.

Mathilde and Camille, who are predestined for medicine, have joined their friends. As this is not their first Garo, they gave them some tips on portfolio management. “It’s a bit expensive for two days!” We spend 250 euros on the side, fortunately, we have a part-time job and reductions thanks to the university’s BDE. Afterwards, it’s a choice, we can put money aside during the year,” say the two young women.

We put ethanol in the gas tank to save money

Antoine, Guillaume, Amaury, Max and Grégoire are civil servants, physiotherapists and IT specialists. They consider themselves less to be pitied than others and have paid the price for this weekend with friends. They estimate the cost of the stay at 500 euros per person. The group of almost thirty-somethings came by car from Clermont-Ferrand.

Aside from tickets, transportation is their biggest item. On this point in particular, they tried to optimize costs in an ingenious way, although a little risky for Grégoire’s Citroën Berlingo. “We put ethanol in the gas tank to save money.” “And I wasn’t allowed to drive at 130 km/h, it was 115 km/h on the highway,” laughs Amaury.

It’s a bit of our summer madness

Léa and Esteban also opted for carpooling and early shopping. The Toulouse resident who had not returned to the Marmandais festival for many years was a little surprised by the increase in the entrance fee. “For the price of one day, we came for two days. If it had been cheaper, we could have afforded to buy goodies and treat ourselves at the bar. » Bar where a captive clientele must pay 8.50 euros, deposit included, for a pint of beer. “It’s a bit of our summer madness,” admits the couple, ready to tighten their belts.

Same observation for Maxime and Margot, brothers and sisters, who came from Clisson, near Nantes. “For each day, I put 500 euros in addition to the tickets, in cashless on the application [qui permet de payer dans l’enceinte du festival]. We did not set foot in the campsite activities, nor at the funfair, because that represents an additional cost,” adds the duo of 26 and 25 years old, who have felt the effects of inflation.
