Paid by the CAF and the MSA, personalized housing assistance (APL) is a benefit that many households benefit from each month in France. Even elderly people in nursing homes can receive it, provided they meet certain criteria.

“Do you want to get financial assistance to reduce the amount of your rent (or fee if you are a resident in an establishment)? You can benefit from personalized housing assistance (APL) if you meet certain conditions,” we can read on the public service website. Moreover, elderly people living in nursing homes can benefit from APL, provided that the residential establishment is approved. In other words, the nursing home in question must have signed an agreement with the prefect.

When this condition is confirmed, no age limit is required to receive the APL. However, a resource ceiling must be respected. The income of the potential beneficiary of the APL is taken into account in the calculation of the amount of this aid, in addition to the location of the nursing home and the amount of the rent (known as the fee).

The income ceiling to be respected in order to receive the maximum amount of personalized housing assistance in 2024 is 5,186 euros for a single person, 7,430 euros for a couple and 8,862 euros for a couple with one dependent. In the case of a couple with two dependents, the income ceiling required to receive the maximum amount of APL in 2024 is 9,061 euros. It increases to 9,408 euros in the case of a couple with three dependents. Once this ceiling is exceeded, the amount of APL decreases.

Furthermore, it is necessary to specify that for elderly people residing in an accommodation establishment for dependent elderly people, the applicant’s assets are not taken into account, even if they exceed 30,000 euros.

To receive APL, the accommodation in the nursing home where the applicant resides must also meet certain criteria. First, it must be the applicant’s residence (at least 8 months per year). Then, the accommodation in question must be at least comfortable for the person residing there (9m2 per person).
