The music world today mourns the early loss of Mourad Tsimpou, young piano prodigy whose talent had amazed so many people through his unique performances. Discovered in poignant circumstances at the hospital of the Helm in Marseille, where he played passionately despite his fragile health, Mourad died this Saturday morning in Paris from a rare liver disease that he had been battling since childhood.
Originally from the city of Castellane, in the northern districts of Marseille, Mourad Tsimpou, known by his stage name Mourad, had captivated the public from its beginnings. At the age of 14, without ever having touched a piano before, he discovered this instrument in the hospital and let himself be carried away by the magic of music. Thanks to his remarkable perfect pitch, he was able to play without a score, reproducing pieces from Chopin and other famous composers after simply hearing them on the Internet.
His meteoric rise to fame came after a video of him playing piano in hospital was shared on social media, sparking an outpouring of admiration and support. Signed to 1392 Records, Mourad released two critically acclaimed albums, with a third in the works at the time of his death. He collaborated with renowned artists such as André Manoukian and Soprano, and even had the honour of performing La Marseillaise at the 2021 Top 14 final.
Despite his persistent illness, Mourad continued to inspire with his music and his strength of character. His Comorian roots were a source of pride and deep connection, and it is in the Comoros, land of his ancestors, that he will rest in peace. His musical legacy will live on, reminding everyone that passion and talent can transcend the greatest challenges.
