The director of the university hospital institute (IHU) of Montpellier, Christian Jorgensen, believes that with sufficient funding, researchers could work on a treatment for stiff person syndrome (PSR), from which Celine Dion suffers. He appeals for donations to obtain 10 million euros.

Discovering a cure for an autoimmune disease requires time and personnel, but above all – and this is the crux of the matter – funds. And obtaining them is not easy when the pathology in question only concerns “50 (people, Editor’s note) at most in France”, explains Christian Jorgensen, the director of the university hospital institute (IHU) of Montpellier to from France Bleu Hérault.

Thus, focusing medical research on stiff person syndrome (PSR) which affects Celine Dion and affects approximately 1 person in 1 million, “interests no one”, observes the Professor. The condition from which the Canadian artist suffers causes sudden and painful paralysis. To raise public awareness of this disease, the star agreed to show one of her attacks in I am: Celine Diona poignant documentary released on the Prime Video platform this week.

The IHU’s IMMUN4CURE project, which studies autoimmune diseases, has therefore launched an appeal to the Quebec star to finance a research program: “If someone today comes with 10 million euros and says to me ‘make me a biomedicine’, I’ll do it,” says the hospital worker.

The singer’s teams already in demand

Professor Christian Jorgensen was already in contact last year with the singer’s teams, underline our colleagues from France Bleu. An unsuccessful contact so far: “There was no follow-up, it was still very complicated to get her to come to Montpellier.” However, the director of the IHU remains optimistic and hopes that the singer will follow through on her request.
