Goose that lays golden eggs or a real cinematic nugget? We will have to wait (a very) long time to judge. According to The Hollywood ReporterWarner Bros. gave the green light to the development of a film dedicated to the universe of Game of Thronesthe phenomenon series based on the saga of George R.R. Martin. The series ended in 2019, with the bitter taste of a disappointing and botched final season, certainly not up to par with the previous episodes which had made GOT one of the best series in history. Could a film change the situation? “Several sources describe the project as being in very early development, with no director, cast or screenwriter at the moment,” specifies THRaccording to information confirmed by Deadline.
Game of Thrones already has its share of series prequel (devoted to previous events), at the head of which House of the Dragonwhose season 2 ended last August. Other projects are in production, including A Knight of the Seven Kingdomsanother prequel based on news Tales of Dunk & Egg. These two creations explore the past and the mythology of Westeros, without direct link with the adventures and characters of the original series.
For a long time, there was talk of a series dedicated to Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington. The project ultimately remains on standby. The actor is not closed to the idea of reprising his role as King in the North, the series itself not being completely abandoned: “We may come back to it in the future, but for the Right now, no. [Le projet] is firmly put away in the cupboard,” he declared in an interview with Screen Rant.
Films to tell the future of the characters?
This is not the first time that the creators of Game of Thrones see their ambitions thwarted: in fact, the series should have ended with three films. According to VarietyGeorge RR Martin had mentioned the idea of a final trilogy at the cinema in 2020. The rumor was recently corroborated by showrunners David Benioff et D.B. Weiss. They confirmed to Wall Street Journal that this was the original plan, abandoned because HBO wanted to finish the story of the conquest of the Iron Throne with episodes designed for the small screen.
If HBO carefully guards Game of Thrones on hand, Warner Bros. could exploit the unexplored narrative material of the series and the novels. Until now, HBO has relied on prequels; potential films could therefore tell stories parallel to the events of Game of Thrones or future adventures, in the format sequel (devoted to later events).
Could this finally be the right time to find out what happened to Jon Snow? Several members of the Stark clan have survived the multiple massacres of the eight seasons, enough to feed sequels promising and rekindle the flame of a wasted series.
