Zurich residents will be able to continue to use the “genre star”, a symbol of inclusive writing. City voters rejected their ban.
On Sunday in Zurich, a somewhat unusual and very ideologically divisive vote shook the city: “gender stars”, the German equivalent of midpoints in French, will not be banned. To the great dismay of a local UDC politician, at the origin of the text.
The initiative, called “Tschüss Genderstern”, that is to say “Goodbye gender star”, will therefore have failed by more than 57%.
If the proposal was timidly accepted by three of the urban districts by up to 52%, the very progressive “Kreis” 3 and 4 voted by almost 72% against this ban, which therefore seemed to have no chance.
“Double wording” not permitted in Zurich
Unlike the midpoint, which “only” serves to separate masculine and feminine phrasing while integrating both modes, the “gender star” represents this distinction while representing non-binary people.
It should be noted, however, that the use of the gender asterisk replaces the use of the “double formulation” masculine and feminine, as used by many administrations – but not the Federal Chancellery, which refused it in in due form at the start of the year.
The “Tschüss Genderstern” initiative was supported by the local SVP, but also the PLR and the Center. The Socialist Party, the Greens and the Green Liberals were opposed to it.

Criticized because they are heavy and polluting, more and more SUVs are sold in Switzerland. However, they could play a decisive role in electrification. This is in fact at a standstill.
On Swiss roads, we equip ourselves. In 2023, the number of new Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) registrations has never been higher. The off-road sedan is therefore by far the most popular type of car in the country. This is the conclusion of a study by the price comparison portal Comparis. SUVs are characterized by special body construction and higher seats. They often look beefier and tend to be heavier than other cars.
