Trick Williams first competed in NXT as Carmelo Hayes’ partner. Williams gradually became a Superstar in his own right, and Hayes turned on him. They faced off and Williams defeated Hayes in the main event of NXT Stand & Deliver. Trick’s rise continued at NXT Spring Breakin’ Week One, where he defeated Ilja Dragunov to win the NXT Championship.
On the April 24 broadcast of “WWE’s The Bump,” Trick Williams was asked to describe how being alongside Carmelo Hayes prepared him for this moment.
He declares :
“Everything, man. This report, you all saw how the whole arena was jumping when I won the title. It’s because I have a special relationship with this audience. They watched me grow for almost three years, and it all started alongside Carmelo Hayes. When I arrived, Carmelo was the man for the job. He had just won the Breakout Tournament, and it was up to me to make Carmelo Hayes look as good as possible. I took my job very seriously. By doing that, the more I focused on Carmelo Hayes, the more people saw me as like I liked the guy. Everything worked in my favor. It wasn’t intentional, I was just doing my job, trying to help Carmelo Hayes. The fact that I did my job so hard really helped me build a rapport with the audience, and here we are today. »
