Should we massively deploy renewable energies in Switzerland? This is the question that the people will have to answer during the vote on June 9 on the law on electricity supply. This plans to accelerate the development on Swiss territory of so-called “green” electricity sources such as wind, solar, hydraulic and even biomass. The objective is to strengthen Swiss energy independence and to fight against climate change.

Although it enjoys broad political support, this law is also opposed by organizations such as the Franz Weber Foundation, for whom it represents a “serious danger for nature”. Wind turbines and other energy infrastructure have an impact on the environment, and their new installations often give rise to opposition. However, studies suggest that it is possible to develop renewable energy in Switzerland, without affecting biodiversity or landscapes too heavily.
