The provincial government declared the end of the measles outbreak in Zone 3, which includes Fredericton and the Haut-Saint-Jean Valley, on Tuesday.
“While this outbreak is over, I encourage New Brunswickers to continue to ensure their vaccinations are up to date,” said Regional Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mark McKelvie.
“Vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones from many vaccine-preventable diseases, such as measles.”
The outbreak was declared on November 1 after a travel-related case was discovered, and it subsequently spread to 50 people in the region. The last case was confirmed on November 26.
Most people are protected against measles after receiving two doses of the vaccine. In New Brunswick, the vaccine that protects against measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox is part of the government-funded routine immunization schedule for babies aged 12 and 18 months. The vaccine is also free for children who have not already received two doses and for adults born in 1970 or later.
The measles virus is transmitted through the air or by direct contact with an infected person. Measles can be more serious in adults and infants, and it can cause complications.
