A “revolutionary” tool for the diagnosis of prostate cancer has arrived at the Simone-Veil hospital in Beauvais.
The prostate cancer is the leading cancer in humans and its third leading cause of death. More than 55,000 new cases are diagnosed every year in France. To meet the challenge “early and accurate diagnosis”the urology department of Simone-Veil hospital center is now equipped with “an imaging station dedicated to targeted prostate fusion biopsy,” the hospital announced in a press release.
This is a technique “biopsy which benefits from guidance towards the “targets” by combining MRI and ultrasound images to create a real-time 3D visualization of the prostate”.
This technique of image fusion aided by artificial intelligence allows surgeons to identify suspicious areas and “to accurately take targeted samples for optimal histological analysis”.
From the year 2025the service Urology plans to achieve more than 150 fusion biopsy procedures per year. These almost painless interventions after local anesthesia infiltrations will take place on a short outpatient basis in order to facilitate the patient journey.
“Fusion biopsy is a major advance in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. In fact, only 30 to 40% of small prostate cancers are detected by more traditional methods, such as PSA testing, digital rectal examination or even ultrasound.rejoices the Beauvais hospital center.
