I8% of children under 15 suffer from at least one food allergy. Over the years, the situation has worsened. Today, more than 3 million French people are affected. From June 24 to 29, World Allergy Week is being held, organized by the French Union of Allergists (Syfal) and the French Federation of Allergology (FFAL).

This year, doctors have chosen to focus on food allergies and their impact on patients’ lives. Séverine Fernandez, allergist in La Ciotat and president of Syfal, looks back at what has become a public health issue.

Point : What is the difference between food allergy and intolerance?

Dr. Séverine Fernandez: Food intolerance is manifested by digestive disorders, pain and fatigue which can occur after meals. What is important is that the vital prognosis is not at stake. Generally, it is enough to adapt the diet to reduce the discomfort. Concerning food allergy, it is an immediate or delayed allergic hypersensitivity. Food allergy can lead to loss of consciousness, anaphylactic shock and even death. We must keep in mind that you can die from a food allergy, it is very serious.
