Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease affect many older people, and their incidence is likely to increase in the coming decades. Indeed, the proportion of people over 60 is expected to increase from 12% to 22% by 2050, according to the World Health Organization. It is therefore essential to discover how to enable people to age in good health, and research is accumulating to limit the risks of developing neurodegenerative diseases.

Some people over the age of 80 maintain good cognitive capacity as well as above-average movement speed. We call them “super-seniors”. According to a recent study (July 2023) published in The Lancet Longevity by researchers from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, in Spain, a healthy lifestyle and certain activities could contribute to this longevity.

The researchers used participants from a study conducted to detect the onset of Alzheimer’s disease in Spain. From a panel of 1,213 participants, the researchers identified 643 “super-seniors” using a test to assess memory. Participants with results comparable to those 30 years younger were considered “super-seniors.” 55 participants were considered “typical elderly.”
