What place do you give to tomatoes in your diet? According to a recent study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, consuming it in quantity (around 100 grams per day) would help control blood pressure. And whatever form matters: in sauce, fresh, cooked… Researchers from the University of Barcelona followed the lifestyle of 7,000 Spaniards at high risk of cardiovascular disease. They were specifically interested in their diet and one ingredient in particular: tomatoes. Four consumption groups were defined: those who ate little (44 grams per day), those who ate “intermediate” (between 44 and 82 grams per day), those who ate “upper intermediate” (up to ‘to 110 grams), and the group that ate more per day was called “high”.

The more tomatoes you eat, the less your risk of high blood pressure

If tomatoes are being studied in the context of cardiovascular health, it is because they contain potassium in particular, the researchers explained. “Potassium is one of the body’s electrolytes, minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in body fluids such as blood.
