Shingles, a viral infection, is caused by the same virus as chickenpoxcontracted in childhood. After this first infection, the virus remains dormant in our body, particularly in the spinal cord. Normally inactive, however, it can reactivate later and trigger shingles.

Usually the immune system is able to control this virus, but as we age our immunity weakens. The main risk factor for developing shingles is therefore age.with a notable increase in risks from 45 years old. Other factors include fatigue, stress, a recent viral infection or certain illnesses that weaken the immune system, such as HIV, diabetes or cancer.

The most common form of shingles is le zona intercostalwhich touches the ribs. The infection often begins with sensations of burning, tingling and pain localized to one side of the chest. A few days later, a rash appears, characterized by small blisters reminiscent of chickenpox. These pimples then turn into scabs before healing.

What are the risks associated with shingles?

There are two main problems. Certain locations can be particularly serious, notably ophthalmic shingles, which affects the nerve of the eye. In this case, pimples appear on the face, and loss of vision is possible, which constitutes a ophthalmological emergency. The other major complication is residual pain : even after the pimples disappear, intense electric shock-like pain can persist for several weeks or even months.

A vaccine, recommended from age 65helps reduce both the risk of developing shingles and the risk of suffering from complications, such as post-shingles pain. It is possible to get vaccinated even after a first episode of shingles. Note that, from the age of 50, the vaccine can be administered, but it will not be reimbursed.
