In brief:
  • SICPA plans to cut up to 120 jobs in the canton of Vaud.
  • The company cites a difficult geopolitical context to justify this reorganization.
  • SICPA says its business volume and orders remain strong.
  • The group is “rising power” in the digital security sector.

The company SICPA, world leader in security inks, particularly for bank notes, indicates that it has launched a consultation procedure with its Vaud staff as part of a restructuring. The multinational based in Prilly announced the figure of a maximum of 120 jobs that could be lost, confirming information given on the RTS airwaves. As a reminder, SICPA employs a thousand people in the canton of Vaud: 700 at the Prilly headquarters and 300 in its Chavornay factory.

For the moment, SICPA does not wish to comment on this information. The group, however, produced a press release in which it indicates that the “international economic context and geopolitical tensions have worsened considerably in many regions of the world in recent years and even more so in recent months”.

Geopolitical tensions

One of the group’s main activities is the manufacture of secure inks, and SICPA is a privileged interlocutor for States around the world and their governments. International tensions are therefore jeopardizing the progress of projects. Higher prices for raw materials, inflation, unfavorable exchange rates and other effects of international sanctions contribute, according to SICPA, to a situation that requires restructuring.

The multinational does not publish its results, but it indicates that the group is doing rather well. “Our business volume remains substantial, our project pipeline is strong and continues to grow,” underlines its press release.

Towards digital

The reorganization planned by the group’s management aims for greater “agility”. The concept remains vague and we will not know what types of jobs are targeted by this measure. However, we can recall that the group has already taken similar steps in the past. However, its size has not decreased with the number of jobs still hovering around 3,000 jobs in some 40 countries. Furthermore, SICPA recently announced that it was the world leader, in volume, in hydrocarbon tracing.

The group therefore adapts to changes in its market. The opening, in 2023, of its campus Unlimitrust is an element which marks a “rise in power in the fields of digital and data science to conquer new market segments with a promising future”, writes SICPA. The group is also positioning itself on the digital identity markets and future central bank digital currencies.
