Currently, the body mass index (BMI) is used to assess whether a person is overweight. Many voices are raised against this measure and suggest favoring a body roundness index (IRC – BRI) which combines waist measurement, weight and height. In China, researchers from Nanjing Medical University wanted to examine how measuring roundness can help predict the risk of cardiovascular disease. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

As part of this study conducted from 2011 to 2020, data from 10,000 Chinese adults aged over 45 were analyzed. According to the results, a higher body curvature index over a 6-year period was associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease among those over 45. “This is the first large-scale study to evaluate body fat index over time and how it may be associated with the incidence of cardiovascular disease in middle-aged and older Chinese adults. elderly”, pointed out the lead author of the study, Yun Qian, a researcher at the Department of Chronic Noncommunicable Disease Control of the Wuxi Center for Disease Control and Prevention of Nanjing Medical University in Nanjing.
