En 2017, Professor James Adams from Arizona State University carried out a transfer of healthy fecal microbiota on 18 children with autism spectrum disorders. The goal: to improve intestinal symptoms, common in these patients. But above all he notes a significant improvement in symptoms linked to autism. Two years after treatment, these people’s symptoms improved further.

This study, carried out on too few people, is not enough to confirm that the transfer of microbiota is effective. But a similar trial is planned at the Robert-Debré hospital in to try to confirm these initial results.

The secret to long life of centenarians?

Researchers are also wondering about the unsuspected effects of the microbiota on aging. Could it be the secret of long life for centenarians? This is the hypothesis made by researchers at the Bioaster institute in .

“We are carrying out an in-depth study of the intestinal flora of a population of centenarian women in order to identify bacteria of interest, probiotics, to develop treatments for tomorrow,” explains Benoît Levast, project manager at the institute. The reasoning is simple: if these people have reached a canonical age, it is thanks to iron health, the result of good genes, good lifestyle habits and probably also a good microbiota.
