Arriving at Wolfsburg last summer, Kevin Behrens stood out. And not for the right reasons. Across the Rhine, a homophobic scandal broke out around the German international (1 selection), reveals Bild . Behrens refused to sign a rainbow jersey (colors of the LGBT+ community), adding that he did not want to sign “those gay shits”.

Embarrassed by his player’s comments, Wolfsburg immediately reacted, saying that the club “is aware of its social responsibility” et that the incident a “immediately treated internally”. For his part, the player also came out of silence and apologized for these “spontaneous statements”which “were absolutely not correct”.

This is not the first time that Kevin Behrens’ family has been controversial. Last summer, during the Olympic Games, Steven van de Velde, his brother-in-law, was targeted by spectators because of his participation despite his conviction for the rape of a 12-year-old girl.
