Already adopted despite the controversy. Mason Greenwood (22 years old) did not take long to win over a large part of Marseille supporters after his arrival at the club this summer. With five goals in three Ligue 1 games, the England international (one selection) was voted best Marseille player of the month of August. The striker signed for OM for 26 million euros from Manchester United, where he was no longer welcome after a complaint for physical and sexual violence filed in January 2022 by his partner Harriet Robson.

“I’ve played in many stadiums in Europe and this is the loudest”

The complaint was eventually withdrawn and the British justice system dropped the charges in January 2023, citing “the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence”. Having been sent on loan to Getafe last season, Greenwood bounced back at OM, where he quickly settled in. “I’ve been here for a month and it’s incredible to win this award (for player of the month, Editor’s note),” he said in a video posted online by the club. “I want to thank the supporters who voted for me, I’m very grateful to them, but without my teammates, the coach, the staff and all the members of the club who helped me, this award would not have been possible.”

Having scored twice on the first day in Brest (1-5), Greenwood also found the back of the net for his big debut at the Vélodrome a week later against Reims (2-2) in an atmosphere he had never tasted before. “It’s incredible, I’ve never seen a crowd like that,” he assures. “I’ve played in a lot of stadiums in Europe and this one is the loudest. Playing for Marseille in this stadium and scoring my first goal there (against Reims), it meant a lot to me. I hope there will be many more during the season.”

He concludes his interview by explaining that he has no specific goals for his first season in France. “I just want to help the team as much as possible by making passes, scoring goals and giving 100%,” he concludes. “We also want to finish as high as possible in the league.”
