As the cult quote reminds us, “The Goonies Never Say Die”and they are right. If the specter of a return of the film has been hovering over the most nostalgic among us for ten years, it is now (almost) certain: the incredible universe created by Steven Spielberg and brought to life by Richard Donner could return to the big screen. A sequel to the film THE Goonies would indeed be in production, according to media information The Sunwith some of the original cast returning on board.

Released in 1985, the film The Goonies is based on a story by Steven Spielberg to tell the crazy adventures of a group of friends in a small, remote area of Oregon, who embark on a thrilling treasure hunt to save their homes, threatened by a plan to rebuild the city. According to The Sun, “Production could begin next summer and the film is expected to be released in theaters in 2026 or 2027.”.

The four heroes Mikey, Bagou, Choco and Data are respectively played in the film by Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings), Corey Feldman (now a musician), Jeff Cohen (now a lawyer) and Ke Huy Quan (Oscar winner in 2023 for his role in Everything Everywhere All at OnceFormer NFL star John Matuszak, who died in 1989 at the age of 38, played the role of the endearing monster Sloth.

While we can expect to see the four kids from the first film (now all in their fifties), the sequel will not be directed by Richard Donner, who died in July 2021 from atherosclerosis. Shortly after his death, the screenwriter of the first Christopher Columbus film shared with the media Empire the desire to continue the adventures of the Goonies: “He called me and said, ‘You know what we should do? We’re going to go on my boat, smoke weed for three days and come up with an idea for The Goonies 2.’”

For his part, Steven Spielberg, who produced and wrote the first film, confided in 2020 the enormous challenge that a possible sequel would represent. Goonies : “The problem is the bar that [ce film] has risen very high within this cinematic genre. I don’t think we’ve seen such a good idea in cinema as The Goonies in the 1980s.”
