This Saturday, September 14, a 46-year-old woman died after being handled by her husband at the couple’s family home in Cormontreuil, near Reims, reports France Bleu Champagne-Ardenne.
The 51-year-old man stabbed the victim several times before attempting to kill himself. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, local radio reported. The couple’s children, who were not present at the time of the incident, were taken into care.
An investigation opened
The incident took place in the couple’s bathroom. For the time being, no information on the context of the tragedy has been communicated by the Reims prosecutor’s office.
The husband was not known to the justice services for acts of domestic violence, but the couple were known to the justice system for acts which were not “nothing to do with it”according to the Reims prosecutor, François Schneider.
An investigation has been opened for the murder of a spouse, the Reims prosecutor’s office said. As of September 10, 98 femicides had been committed in France, according to a count established by the Nous Toutes collective since the beginning of 2024.
