Two 31-year-old men were injured, including an Italian national who was very seriously injured, by Kalashnikov shots on the night of Saturday to Sunday in Fontaine, a town bordering Grenoble, the prosecutor said.

One of the two injured is a 31-year-old Italian, a “cannabis user”, who “was shot in the head and whose life is in danger”, Grenoble prosecutor Eric Vaillant said in a message to the press.

The Codis (Departmental Fire and Rescue Operational Centre) services initially told AFP that the man had also been shot in the abdomen.

The second injured person, also aged 31, was lightly injured in the back. According to the prosecutor, he is “known to the police for insults, violence and drug use”.

At the scene of the shooting, around twenty 7.62 caliber shell casings were found, Mr. Vaillant said, confirming information from a police source.

During their escape, “the criminals had a material collision with a motorist who pursued them, until two passengers threatened him with their weapons,” the prosecutor said.

The vehicle of the “perpetrators of these attempted murders” was found burned in a western district of Grenoble, shortly after the events, he added.

This new shooting occurred a few hours before the silent march organized Sunday afternoon in Grenoble by the family of Lilian Dejean, a municipal employee shot dead a week ago by a man still on the run and known to the justice system, in particular for violence and drug trafficking.

This new episode also comes in a context of tensions in the Alpine metropolis, after a summer marked by a series of violence and shootings between drug traffickers.

Since the beginning of the year, at least 18 episodes of gun violence have been recorded in the territory and the authorities no longer hesitate to speak of a “gang war”.
