Despite the victory, Nuno Mendes’ evening was marred by racist insults. On Saturday, after Paris Saint-Germain’s victory at the Parc des Princes against Brest (3-1), for the fourth day of Ligue 1, the Portuguese full-back denounced racist comments he received on social networks.

The player shared, via an Instagram story, a screenshot of a message he received during the match, in which is written “Negro hijo de puta” with monkey emojis.

“Paris Saint-Germain gives its full support to its player Nuno Mendes, who was the target of insulting and racist comments on social media on the sidelines of last night’s match against Stade Brestois,” the club responded on Sunday.

“Racism has no place in football”

“Paris Saint-Germain does not tolerate any form of racism, anti-Semitism or any other form of discrimination. The racial insults directed at Nuno Mendes are completely unacceptable. We firmly support Nuno and all those concerned, and we are working with the authorities and relevant associations to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions,” the statement continued.

This is not the first time that a player from the capital club has been targeted by racist acts. In April, after their quarter-final second leg against Barcelona, PSG wrote to UEFA to denounce the behavior of some Barcelona supporters towards Ousmane Dembélé. The previous year, two Juve fans were convicted of racist gestures at the Parc des Princes.

“At Paris Saint-Germain, we are committed to fostering an environment of inclusion, respect and unity both on and off the pitch. Racism has no place in football and we will continue to uphold the values of tolerance and respect that define our club,” Paris Saint-Germain concluded.
