Brigitte Bardot rants and denounces a massacre

The legendary French actress of the 1950s and 1960s does not know the holidays: Tuesday, December 31, she denounced what she calls a “massacre” of the chamois in the Doubs. It is supported by a petition.

Brigitte Bardot denounced on Tuesday a “massacre” of chamois in the French department of Doubs. The prefect authorized the slaughter of 594 animalsin the name of protecting vegetation. The former actress wrote, in an open letter to prefect Rémi Bastille:

“Nothing ever stops the hunters and the State delights, in mediocre clientelism, in sacrificing the living on the altar of the particular interests of the hunters who still dare to drape themselves in the clothes of protectors of biodiversity,” accuses the star.

In a decree dated August 21, the prefect of Doubs set the hunting plan for the 2024-2025 season at a range of 259 to 594 chamois. The same decree concerning deer sets their harvest between 72 and 209 animals.

Petition with more than 60,000 signatures

In a presentation note, state services justified this decree in July by preventing forest damage committed by the two species on young trees. The prefectural decision alarmed animal rights associations. An online petition from the Humanimo association had collected more than 62,000 signatures on Tuesday.

“We can only be surprised because at the same time, the killing of wolves is very widely practiced and its eradication is even claimed by some,” denounces the association.
