In 1990, Vin Diesel made his film debut starring in the film Awakening (Awakenings Upon its release, the feature film managed to catch the eye of none other than Steven Spielberg, who took the opportunity to write a tailor-made role for Vin Diesel: the famous Adrian Caparzo from Saving Private Ryan. However, in an interview with The National in 2020, the American actor revealed that Spielberg was still angry with him for a certain mistake:

Speaking of Steven Spielberg, I saw him recently and he said to me, ‘When I wrote the role for you in Saving Private Ryan, I was obviously hiring the actor, but I was also secretly defending the director in you, and you didn’t direct enough.

Because yes, in case you didn’t know, Vin Diesel also had a brief career as a director in his life.. He notably created the short film Multi-Facial in 1995 in which he played the lead role. The latter was also screened at the Cannes Film Festival, a great debut for the young director he was at the time. In addition to Multi-Facial, Vin Diesel also directed a 20-minute short film from the Fast & Furious franchise entitled Bandits. Since its release in 2009, the American actor has never directed anything again, much to Spielberg’s regret.

It is precisely this lack of directorial ambition in Vin Diesel that Spielberg called a “crime against cinema.” According to him, Vin Diesel has real talent as a director, and he even begged him to “return to the director’s chair”. Yet, despite all of Spielberg’s efforts, Vin Diesel has yet to announce any directing projects. He has already spoken in interviews about his desire to create a trilogy about General Hannibal Barca, but nothing has ever been made official. With any luck, the American actor will one day accept Steven Spielberg’s request and move to the other side of the camera.
