LAmerican artists continue to get involved in the presidential campaign in the United States. Last to plunge into the fray at the risk of anathema or a proper smear campaign from Donald Trump: Stevie Nicks, 76, remarkable voice of the group Fleetwood Mac which published Friday September 27 Lighthousea fight song for abortion rights. The American singer had not released an original song since her last album in 2011, In Your Dreams.

The clip, nourished by images of recent and older demonstrations, recalls the long battle of women to make their voices heard, from the right to vote to the right to control their body. The words not only warn of the seriousness of the situation, but call for mobilization to defend a right which has been reduced to nothing since the invalidation in June 2022 of the Roe v Wade judgment, which in 1973 had allowed to legalize abortion at the federal level.

“They’ll take your soul, take your power, unless you stand up, take it back / Try to see the future and go crazy / It’s slipping through your fingers, you don’t have what you had / And you don’t have much time to get it back”, sings Stevie Nicks, accompanied on backing vocals by Sheryl Crow, who co-produced the song. In the British daily The Guardianthe singer explains that she started writing this title on September 6, 2022 with the idea of defending “the women of the United States, their daughters and granddaughters – and the men who love them.”

Like Taylor Swift, Stevie Nicks does not officially support Kamala Harris, but encourages her listeners to register to vote in order to vote “according to their beliefs”. A text followed by a signature, “childless dog woman”in reference to the controversy arising from comments made by JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, who compared, to denigrate them, the Democrats to childless cat ladies (Childless cat ladies).

Fourteen US states have banned abortion since June 2022, and eleven have made it very difficult to access. Recently, the Supreme Court recognized that a woman died in August 2022, due to delayed care caused by new restrictive abortion laws in the state of Georgia.
