Healthy people infected with salmonella may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. The infection may be more serious for young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

Public health officials said the investigation is continuing and more cases may be reported in the outbreak because there is a time lag between when a person becomes ill and when the disease is reported.

This warning follows another salmonella-related egg recall, also issued over the weekend.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has recalled certain brands of eggs in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and elsewhere due to possible salmonella contamination.

In this case, the recall was triggered by test results and no cases of illness were reported, the agency said Saturday.

The recall includes Compliments, Foremost, Golden Valley Eggs, IGA, no name and Western Family eggs with best before dates of February 16, February 22 and March 1.
