It looks like the rules of the game are going to change for the taxation of games of chance in France. A proposal is on the table to review how gambling is taxed, and it’s causing quite a stir in the industry. The goal? Respond to critics saying that it is a real headache today, while filling the state coffers a little more. This overhaul could well shake up not only public finances, but also directly affect the players and the companies that manage these games.
What is behind this new tax?
So, what exactly is going on? The idea is to introduce a new tax on earnings exceeding 500 euros Loto, Euromillions, sports betting or even scratch games. And that’s not all: even the advertising for these games could be used to replenish state coffers.
This project does not lack ambition since it aims to bring a billion euros per year. With this money, we could finance lots of public projects or reduce the hole in the national budget. But inevitably, it raises questions: will it discourage certain players? And what will be the benefits for those who organize these games?
A wise eye on taxation
The Council for Compulsory Deductions (CPO) is at the heart of this reflection. This independent group linked to the Court of Auditors published a note pointing out the current complexity of taxes on games of chance. They say it’s illegible and propose to simplify all this with uniform rates depending on the type of game.
According to them, if we follow their idea, the levy on the gross product of sports betting would go from 46% to 58%that of online poker would increase by 30% to 46.3%while for horse racing betting, it would drop by 33% to 26.5%. The goal is to harmonize all of this and ensure a good financial return for the State.
Tax harder against addiction?
But it’s not just a question of money: there is also a prevention aspect against game addiction. Games considered more eye-catching could be taxed more. We are thinking here of sports betting and scratch cards which can make some players addicted.
The consequences can go well beyond a simple emptied wallet: family conflicts or other personal concerns can arise. For those looking for a helping hand, there is a dedicated resource: joueurs-info-service.frwith a toll-free number: 09 74 75 13 13.
A clearer horizon?
This tax reform could well redefine how games of chance are viewed and managed in France. By making taxation clearer and adjusting certain taxes to address the risks of addiction, we seek to establish a fairer and more transparent system.
However, each change must be carefully considered to avoid any unpleasant surprises on the gaming market or among its fans. While the debate continues around these innovative ideas, it is now up to political and economic decision-makers to weigh all the benefits before possible implementation.
Ultimately, this initiative pushes everyone – whether casual player or professional in the sector – to rethink their relationship with this fascinating but complex world of gambling.
