Two men in their sixties were arrested with around thirty kilos of illegally caught eels on the night of Wednesday 13 to Thursday 14 September 2023. Tried by the Quimper court (Finistère) on Monday 1 July 2024, they were fined €3,500 after admitting their guilt.

Two Belgian men in their sixties were tried by the Quimper court (Finistère) on Monday 1is July 2024, for illegal fishing: on the night of Wednesday 13 to Thursday 14 September 2023, the police found 30 kg of eels caught without authorisation in South Finistère in their holiday home.

Eels sold on the black market

They acknowledged the poaching and explained that eel was selling very well on the black market in Belgium, up to €90-95 per kilo a few years ago.

The two men, who had no criminal records, were finally fined €3,500, to which was added a fine of €500 and two of €100. Their fishing equipment was confiscated.
